Welcome to "WE Rise," a series celebrating the journeys of inspiring entrepreneurs who are making a difference. Each story we feature will offer a unique perspective on building a business, overcoming challenges, and creating a positive impact. Through "WE Rise," we aim to empower our community.
Today, I'm honored to introduce you to Dr. Rashida Vassell, a physician, breast cancer survivor, and the founder of Safahla Medical. Nestled in the Finger Lakes region of New York, Safahla Medical is a testament to Dr. Vassell's dedication to accessible, compassionate, and holistic healthcare. Her story is one of resilience, vision, and a deep commitment to serving her community.
"My inspiration for Safahla Medical stemmed from a deeply personal experience. As both a physician and a breast cancer survivor, I navigated the healthcare system from both sides of the table."

Dr. Rashida Vassell's path to founding Safahla Medical was deeply personal. As she puts it, "My inspiration for Safahla Medical stemmed from a deeply personal experience. As both a physician and a breast cancer survivor, I navigated the healthcare system from both sides of the table." Thisdual perspective gave her a unique understanding of the healthcare system's shortcomings, particularly in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions, where access to specialized care often required long-distance travel.
Driven by a vision of "exquisite, bespoke, and holistic care locally," Dr. Vassell set out to create a new kind of medical practice. Safahla Medical, a hybrid combining traditional medical services with a spa-like environment, was born from this vision. It wasn't just about treating, but about creating a nurturing space for healing and well-being.

The journey wasn't easy. "Securing funding for a hybrid medical practice/day spa model in a rural area was difficult," Dr. Vassell admits. "Traditional lenders were hesitant about the combination of services and the location." Yet, Dr. Vassell's commitment to her vision fueled her perseverance. She explored alternative funding avenues, such as small business grants, and focused on building strong relationships within the community. "We actively engaged with the local community through educational workshops, open houses, and partnerships with local organizations," she shares, highlighting the importance of building trust in a new healthcare model.

Dr. Vassell's story offers invaluable lessons for any aspiring entrepreneur. "One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is the importance of resilience and perseverance," she reflects. "Building a business, especially in healthcare, is not easy. There will be setbacks, obstacles, and moments of doubt. But the ability to stay focused on your vision, to learn from your mistakes, and to keep moving forward, even when things get tough, is absolutely crucial for success."
Beyond resilience, Dr. Vassell emphasizes the importance of community support. "The power of community support and the profound impact of providing compassionate care are immeasurable," she states. It's a reminder that businesses are not built in isolation but thrive through connection and collaboration.

When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Dr. Vassell says, "Be bolder and more confident in pursuing my vision. Don't be afraid to take risks and don't let self-doubt hold you back. Trust your instincts and believe in your ability to overcome challenges." She also stresses the importance of prioritizing self-care, a lesson often learned the hard way. "You can't pour from an empty cup," she reminds us.
For those looking to build strong relationships in business, Dr. Vassell advises authenticity, active listening, and offering value. "Be authentic," she says. "People can spot inauthenticity a mile away. Be genuine in your interactions and let your true personality shine through."
Dr. Vassell's definition of a "wise woman" resonates deeply with the "WE Rise" ethos:
"Someone who possesses a combination of knowledge, experience, and intuition... She is empathetic and compassionate, understanding the interconnectedness of all things... She uses her wisdom to empower others, to make a positive impact on the world, and to live a life of purpose and meaning."
This spirit of collective support is what Dr. Vassell believes is crucial for women in business. "Women can support each other in countless ways," she says, emphasizing the need for mentorship, networking, sharing resources, celebrating successes, and advocating for one another.
Dr. Rashida Vassell's journey with Safahla Medical is a powerful example of how personal experience can fuel a vision for a better world. Her story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the importance of community, and the transformative power of purpose-driven entrepreneurship.

Dr. Vassell's commitment to accessible, compassionate care serves as an inspiration to us all.
